Role of Health Supplements in Bodybuilding
A total bodybuilding program consists of three main components- a well devised workout program, a proper diet and nutrition plan, and health supplements. Without the first two, the third will not help in building your body the way you want to. There is a prevailing misconception among people that health supplements can perform miracles and give them the body they covet without any exercise or a compromise on binge eating. This is totally wrong. It should be kept in mind that a supplement will work only if you follow a regular workout schedule diligently and take care of your diet.
Taking supplements should be done under the supervision of a professional trainer, as he/she will be able to guide you properly. There are a wide number of bodybuilding supplements available in the market. However, consuming any one of them without proper guidance will not only deter you from achieving the goals you are aiming for, but even cause health hazards if you are not careful enough.
There are generally two main types of bodybuilding supplements: regular and non-regular. While protein, creatine, and glutamine are some of the most widely used regular supplements, non-regular supplements include NO2, ribose, tribulus etc. Here is a list of the commonly used health supplements that aid in bodybuilding:
Protein: This is the most widely used bodybuilding supplement. It is generally taken in powdered form right before or after exercise, or as a replacement for any meal. It is consumed for proper growth and repair of muscle tissues. Common protein supplements include whey protein, egg white protein, casein protein, and the like.
Essential Fatty Acids: This is another must-have bodybuilding supplement that many bodybuilders rely on. Generally, a strict diet chart can make bodybuilders lose out on the fat content, as they often have to keep to extremely low fat diets. However, certain essential fats are necessary for regular body functions, and it is then that essential fatty acid supplements come into the picture.
Meal replacement products: Bodybuilders have to take several small meals instead of the regular three meals as this helps in burning their fat fast and gives them more energy. Meal Replacement Products (MRP) come in handy during these short meal times. MRPs can come in either powdered form or in a bar form. Both can be taken in place of a whole-food meal. Many such products include whey protein, egg albumin, calcium caseinate, and other nutrients.
There are a wide number of various health supplements available in the market. Remember to use them only after consulting your bodybuilding instructor; do not buy them over the counter.
